Pulwama: The Department of Biotechnology at Government Degree College Pulwama organised a day-long programme to mark the International Day of Immunology, focusing on the theme “Regulatory T Cells: Guardians of Immune Balance.”
The event aimed to highlight the role of regulatory T cells in maintaining immune balance and their significance in combating cancer, infections, and autoimmune diseases.
The programme began with a welcome address by the Principal of GDC Pulwama, who underscored the importance of immunology in understanding disease mechanisms and advancing modern healthcare. This was followed by an overview by Dr. Niyaz Ahmad Naikoo, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, who emphasised the role of regulatory T cells in maintaining immune homeostasis.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Pervaiz A. Dar, who spoke on “CAR T Regulatory Cells (CAR-Tregs): Concepts and Clinical Potential.”
In the post-tea session, lectures were delivered by Dr. Suhail Yousuf and Dr. Shahid Banday from Islamic University of Science and Technology. Their talks, titled “Tregs: The Immune System’s Double-Edged Sword” and “Reprogramming Immunity: Turning Immune Cells into Living Drugs,” explored the dual role of regulatory T cells in immune suppression and disease progression, along with recent advances in immunotherapy.
An interactive immunology quiz was also organised by Dr. Shah Ubaid Ullah using the Kahoot platform, which saw enthusiastic participation from students.
The programme proceedings were conducted by Ms. Suraya Qadir and witnessed active participation from students, paramedical trainees, and faculty members, reflecting strong engagement with the subject.
