Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has launched a sports-based anti-drug campaign under the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, aimed at engaging youth in structured sporting activities and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.

As part of the initiative, the inaugural Pulwama Kabaddi League will be held from May 1 to May 3, featuring eight teams and 96 players from across the Kashmir division. Participating teams include Pulwama Panthers, Midline J&K, Harmokh Warriors (Bandipora), AR Warriors (Bandipora), United Kashmir (Baramulla), AKC Budgam, Kulgam Tigers, and other district-level sides.

Officials said the league is designed not only as a competitive sporting event but also as a social intervention to channel youth energy into constructive pursuits, encourage discipline, and discourage substance abuse. The open-category format allows participation from both experienced and emerging players.

Highlighting the growing impact of grassroots sports, authorities cited the example of local athlete Aamir Hamid Wani, who was recently selected for the Pro Kabaddi League Season 11 at a base price of ₹9 lakh.

The campaign will be expanded in the coming weeks with additional sporting events, including a volleyball tournament in Shopian, a football league in Anantnag, and women-focused leagues to promote inclusive participation.

Commissioner Secretary Youth Services and Sports Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said the initiative aims to use sports as a tool for social transformation. He encouraged youth to actively participate and contribute towards building a healthier and drug-free society.

Officials said the campaign focuses on strengthening grassroots sports while addressing social challenges through community engagement and positive youth involvement.
