Srinagar: The Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday celebrated the 20th National Statistics Day at its Bemina office, highlighting the importance of reliable data in evidence-based policymaking and governance.
The programme, organised as part of the nationwide observance by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, marked the birth anniversary of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, regarded as the father of Indian statistics.
Commissioner Secretary, Planning, Development and Monitoring Department, R. Alice Vaz, inaugurated the event and stressed the importance of robust statistical systems for planning, governance and sustainable development.
She called upon officers and field staff to ensure timely, accurate and reliable data collection, stating that quality statistics are essential for effective monitoring, evaluation and targeted development. Vaz also said the department is committed to adopting modern technology to strengthen the statistical framework and improve data accessibility for planners, researchers and citizens.
Director General, Economics and Statistics, Riyaz Ahmad Romshoo highlighted the role of young statisticians and new entrants in strengthening the department.
During the programme, messages from the Lieutenant Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary were read out, emphasising the importance of statistics in promoting evidence-based governance and inclusive development.
Regional Director, Evaluation and Statistics, Jammu, Ashu Gupta; Regional Director, Evaluation and Statistics, Kashmir, Sheikh Shavaiz Ahmad; and former Director General of Economics and Statistics, G.A. Qureshi also addressed the gathering.
The event featured technical sessions with presentations by departmental officers, trainees of the School of Applied Economics and Statistics (SAES) and postgraduate research scholars. Discussions focused on the theme “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data” and explored ways to strengthen administrative data systems, improve statistical literacy and enhance the use of official statistics in policymaking.
A similar programme was also organised at the DES Camp Office in Janipur, Jammu, attended by Principal SAES Jammu Deepa Sharma, Joint Director (Surveys) Shoba Rani and other officers and officials of the department.
