Bid to look bank foiled, 3 injured

Srinagar: Three people were injured as militants opened fire inside a bank branch in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district today after their bid to rob the bank was foiled by an alert sentry and the public present there.

Two civilians and a bank guard sustained injuries in the attack in Mohanpura area of the district, a police spokesperson said.

The sources identified the injured as Ashiq Hussain Itoo, son of Gh Ahmad of Mohadpura, Kulgam (bullet in left arm); Mohd Ashraf Pinjwa, of Brari Angan (bullet in left leg) and; Siraj Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Majid of Vessue, Batpura (glass splinters in left leg).

In a press statement a police spokesman said the people present at the branch foiled the militants’ bid to loot the bank.

“People resisted the attempt of the terrorists and forced them to flee from the spot. Infuriated by this, terrorists fired resulting in injuries to two civilians and a bank guard,” he added.

The spokesman said that no cash was looted from the bank, adding, the injured were subsequently shifted to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
