JAMMU, JANUARY 07: Jammu and Kashmir River Rejuvenation Committee (RRC), today submitted an action plan for identified polluted stretches of   nine rivers of the state to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for approval.

The plan, formulated and submitted in compliance to the National Green Tribunal order, envisages cleaning of the identified polluted stretches the nine rivers of the state.

The polluted stretches identified for Jammu province include 5 km stretch from Guru Ravi Dass temple to Nainsu along River Devika at Udhampur, 3 km stretch from location pony shed to Bathing ghatBanganga along holy stream Banganga at Katra, 5 km stretch from Surajpur to Belicharana along River Tawi in Jammu, 5 km stretch from Samba to Chak Manga Rakwal, adjoining to IGC (Ind. Growth Centre) Samba along River Basanter at Samba, 12 km stretch from location Jiopota to Pargwal at Akhnoor along River Chenab.

Likewise, four different river stretches have been identified as polluted in Kashmir valley including River Chuntkol, a tributary of River Jhelum, with approximate length of  5 km, from location Maulana Azad Bridge to Kanikadal,  two different stretches of River Jhelum at Gawkadal from location Gawkadal bridge to Nowhatta which is a 2 km stretch and a long stretch covering approximate length of 40 km fromlocationChattabal Weir to Anantnag and a stretch of 3.7 km on river Sindh at Ganderbal along the main stream Dudarhama.

The Committee   comprising Director, Environment & Remote Sensing, J&K, Director, Industries and Commerce, Kashmir, Director, Industries and Commerce, Jammu, Director, Urban Development / Bodies, Jammu, Director, Urban Development / Bodies, Kashmir and Member Secretary, J&K SPCB, was   entrusted with the task of formulation of Action Plan for mitigation of pollution load of identified stretches of Rivers of J&K. Accordingly, the RRC has prepared a comprehensive Action Plan for restoring the water quality of  Nine identified polluted stretches of Rivers in Jammu and Kashmir state.

Pertinently, the Action plan has been formulated by the RRC after conducting series of meetings and discussions under the chairmanship of Commissioner/Secretary, Forests, Ecology and Environment.
