Shopian, October 23: Residents of Chitragam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district are facing tough time due to the acute shortage of tap water from last 2 months.
Residents here accused the Public Health Engineering (PHE) authorities of being indifferent towards their sufferings for failing to maintain the regular tap water supply in their area.
They said that water supply to their village was badly hit right after the road widening work on Bijbehara-Shopian road kick-started in the month of September. “Government on one hand stresses on developmental projects but on the other it has deprived us from basic amenities of life. The water pipelines through which water gets supplied to our village got damaged during the construction and widening work on Bijbehara-Shopian road and the concerned department has done nothing to restore them,” they added.
One of the residents of Chitragam village, Bilal Ahmad, said that they have met the concerned officials several times while appealing them to improve the water supply in their area but to no avail. “Although we have a number of tube wells in our area but they work on electricity only which also remains scarce here and there are several areas in our village including Dangerpora, Trapadpora, Rang Mohalla and Chidipora which do not have any tube wells,” he added.
When contacted Executive Engineer PHE Shopian Division he said: “Although, the road widening may have impacted the water supply in Chitragam village but the said village gets water supply during evening hours, however, I will still look into the matter and will do necessary as soon as possible.”
