Acute water shortage hits Shopian district, residents aghast

Shopian, 01 September: Residents of Drawni, Ali Shahpora and Gund Darvesh villages of Shopian district are up in arms against Public Health Engineering (PHE) department as they are facing acute water shortage from last five days.

Locals said, they are facing acute water shortage from last 5 days and have to travel long distances to fetch water for daily needs.

They added that all three villages are supplied water from Hillow area of Shopian.

One of the residents of Ali Shahpora Sabzar Ahmad said, “There is only a single hand pump in our area where women folk have to wait for hours, in a queue, only to fetch few liters of water.

Another resident of Drawini village said, “They are facing water shortage from last 5 days as there is no drinking water facility available in our area.

Meanwhile, locals of Gund Darvesh village also complained of water shortage in their area.

When contacted Executive Engineer PHE Shopian Division he said, “Water pipelines are being shifted owing to road widening and which is why the area is not getting water supply.”

“The shifting of water pipeline will take some time, however, I will check the details and the water will be supplied to the villages by tanker till the water supply is restored,” he added.
