Reviews NGT action plan, calls for quality checks and closer monitoring of ongoing works
SRINAGAR: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner Dr Basharat Qayoom on Saturday directed the concerned departments and executing agencies to expedite ongoing water supply augmentation projects under AMRUT 2.0 and ensure their completion within the stipulated timelines.
He issued the directions while chairing a review meeting at the SMC headquarters in Karan Nagar to assess the progress of projects under AMRUT 2.0 and review the implementation of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Action Plan.
During the review, Qayoom stressed that strengthening the city’s water supply infrastructure and addressing shortages in different localities must remain a priority. He asked the executing agencies to speed up ongoing works while ensuring compliance with prescribed technical specifications and quality standards.
The approved AMRUT 2.0 projects are expected to improve water supply in several Srinagar localities, including Batamaloo, Aloochibagh, Jenab Sahab Soura, Bagwanpora, Lal Bazaar, Natipora, Malbagh, Jawahar Nagar, HMT and Lawaypora.
Emphasising the need to maintain quality in public infrastructure, the Commissioner directed officials to strengthen field-level supervision and regularly assess both the physical and financial progress of the projects. He also called for the timely identification and removal of bottlenecks affecting their execution.
He said ongoing development initiatives must translate into tangible improvements in civic services and asked the concerned departments and executing agencies to work in coordination to address infrastructure gaps and improve the availability and reliability of essential services.
The meeting also reviewed various environmental interventions under the NGT Action Plan. Qayoom called for coordinated efforts by all stakeholder departments to ensure effective implementation of the prescribed measures and compliance with the tribunal’s directions. He stressed regular monitoring and timely resolution of pending issues.
The Commissioner further directed the concerned departments and executing agencies to submit comprehensive, updated reports on projects under their respective jurisdictions. The reports are to include details of work completed, pending activities, implementation challenges and proposed timelines for completion.
He said the reports would help assess the progress of individual projects, identify issues requiring intervention and ensure better monitoring and follow-up.
The meeting was attended by Joint Commissioners overseeing Administration, Revenue and Enforcement, Works, and Health and Sanitation; Financial Advisor/Chief Accounts Officer; Superintending Engineer, Drainage Circle; Divisional Forest Officer; Executive Engineers from Mechanical/Solid Waste Management Office, UEED and Jal Shakti departments; Assistant Legal Remembrancer; and Chief Enforcement Officer, SMC.
