NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Production Minister Javid Ahmad Dar on Tuesday called for greater focus on region-specific agricultural research and innovation for the Union Territory while addressing the 97th Annual General Meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi.

The minister said Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST)-Jammu and SKUAST-Kashmir had secured 143 patents during the past four years and stressed the need to translate scientific research into practical solutions for farmers.

He identified climate-resilient horticulture as a key area requiring focused research, including development of disease-free planting material, climate-resilient saffron, precision irrigation, mechanisation, quality testing, value addition, branding and export-oriented production.

Dar also advocated a scientific and region-specific plant quarantine system based on Pest Risk Analysis, biological Post-Entry Quarantine, molecular indexing and process-based phytosanitary certification.

He further called for strengthening research and innovation in animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries, post-harvest management, processing and value addition. According to the minister, agricultural research should contribute to higher productivity, lower input costs, improved climate resilience, better market access and increased farm incomes.

He also stressed the need for closer coordination among ICAR, agricultural universities, government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure research addresses the specific needs of Jammu and Kashmir.
