Srinagar: Police in Ganderbal have arrested a gang of thieves involved in various cases of theft and recovered stolen property worth lakhs from their possession, a police spokesperson informed Sunday.

He said acting on a complaint about theft in Yarmuqam Lar, police during investigation rounded up some suspects. During questioning, two of them — Tariq Ahmad Rather, son of Ghulam Mohammad Rather of Khan Mohalla Pati Takanwari, and Manzoor Ahmad Chopan, son of Ghulam Mohammad Chopan of Larson Ganderbal, admitted their involvement in the theft.

They also revealed that they along with their other associates, who had fled to Kargil, are also involved in two more theft cases.

A police party was dispatched to Kargil and three more accused persons — Sheraz Ahmad Guroo alias Sheru, son of Mohammad Shafi Guroo of Gaad Hanjimohalla Gund Roashan; Showket Ahmad Saad alias Veeru, son of Gul Saad of Narayan Bagh Shadipora; and one juvenile (name withheld) were apprehended.

Stolen property worth lakhs including cash amount of ₹10,000, seven gold rings, 14 gold earrings and tops and a broach were recovered from their possession.

Further investigation of the cases is going on and more recoveries and arrests are expected, police said.
