Srinagar: Women’s wing of the National Conference staged a protest here today demanding immediate release of three Kashmiri students who have been booked for sedition in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly cheering for the Pakistan cricket team.

Shouting slogans “do justice with innocent students, revoke sedition”, scores of NC’s women wing activists led by its president Shameema Firdous assembled at party headquarters at Nawai-Subh and staged a protest against UP government’s move to book three Kashmiri students.

Pertinently three Kashmiri students Arshad Yusuf, Inayat Altaf Sheikh and Showkat Ahmed Ganai, have been booked for sedition in Agra, UP.

Talking to media, former legislator Shameema Firdous, while taking a jibe on UP chief minister, Yogi Adityanath for justifying sedition charges against three students said “those taking law for granted must die of shame”.

“Mere clapping does not invoke stringent laws against innocent students; Mr Yogi, do you know what sedition means and what impact it will have on the future of those students who were booked on your instructions,” added Firdous.

The NC leader also said the retired Supreme Court judge in an interview also described as ‘unjustified’ invoking sedition against the Kashmiri students. She demanded immediate release of all three students who she claimed are being targeted for being Kashmiris.

“Retired SC judge, Justice Deepak Gupta in an interview with Karan Thapar also said that mere clapping does not amount to sedition. Now how far is this genuine to book students under such stringent laws when a retired judge also described the move as unjustified?” she said.
