BARAMULLA: Renowned Kashmiri writer and poet Rangroor Tilgami on Sunday called for a renewed focus on literary quality, readership and translation, saying that despite a growing number of publications, Kashmiri literature continues to struggle to reach audiences beyond the Valley.

Addressing a one-day literary conference organised by the Baramulla Writers Forum at Dak Bungalow, Baramulla, Tilgami said literary organisations must take responsibility for passing on language, art and literature to the next generation while encouraging writing that meets wider literary standards.

He appreciated the forum’s efforts to sustain literary activities but questioned whether those working for the promotion of Kashmiri had succeeded in producing works capable of attracting a global readership.

Distinguishing between the quantity and quality of publications, Tilgami said the growing number of books should not be treated as an indicator of literary progress.

“Earlier, we used to have literate writers; today, we have writer-literates who write first and read afterwards,” he said, adding that many books were read only within the authors’ own circles.

Tilgami said much of contemporary Kashmiri poetry and writing remained confined to temporary entertainment rather than achieving lasting artistic value. He called on writers to explore universal themes and human experiences that could resonate across cultures and generations.

He also stressed the need to improve literary craftsmanship, aesthetics and depth, noting that many Kashmiri poets continued to have limited readership outside local academic and research circles.

The conference brought together writers, poets, academicians and literary personalities from across North Kashmir to discuss the language’s literary and cultural future.

Two books were released during the programme: Asrama Jan, authored by educator Rince, and Princess Without Her Prince. The latter was also presented through a student performance.

Abdul Rahman Saya and Mushtaq Hussain Kirmani were felicitated in recognition of their contributions to literature.

The first session was anchored by Anzer Mohju, while A.R. Bhat, patron of the Baramulla Writers Forum, delivered the welcome address.

Renowned Kashmiri poet, writer and broadcaster Dr Shabnam Ashai recited her poetry, highlighting the role of literary expression in conveying emotions and human experiences. She also called on literary forums to involve young people in creative writing and provide them platforms to develop their skills.

Ashai said the participation of young people in writing books and poetry was encouraging and stressed the need for sustained efforts to nurture their talent.

The second session began with a mushaira featuring poets and literary figures from North Kashmir, including Syed Basharat Bukhari, Bashir Charag, Tana Nazami, Mujro Kashmiri and Dr Tariq Abdullah Khawar, among others.

The sessions were presided over by Tilgami. Dr Shabnam Ashai, Maqbool Ferozi and Surinder Singh Sood were also associated with the proceedings.

Showkat Habib anchored the second session, while Tahir-ur-Rahman presented the vote of thanks.
