SOPORE: A 60-year-old man drowned in the River Jhelum at Vijibal Doabgah in Sopore on Saturday after he reportedly slipped into the water while attempting to pull his boat towards the riverbank for repairs.
The deceased was identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Sumji, son of Sonaullah Sumji, a resident of Sher Colony, Sopore.
Officials said Sumji fell into the river during the process and was swept away. Following the incident, a joint rescue operation was launched by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and local residents to trace him.
After intensive search efforts, the body was recovered from the Jhelum and shifted for necessary medico-legal formalities.
Police later handed over the body to the family for last rites.
