New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday interacted with India’s Commonwealth Games champions, congratulating them for bringing glory to the nation and expressing confidence that they would continue their winning streak in future international events.
During the interaction, Modi highlighted the transformation of Indian sports over the past decade and said the achievements of athletes inspire young people more effectively than any campaign or message.
“Your medal inspires them more than anything we could say by going to schools,” the Prime Minister told the athletes.
He praised the perseverance and dedication of sportspersons, recalling stories shared by athletes who overcame injuries, personal hardships and setbacks to achieve success on the international stage. He said such victories become a source of inspiration for future generations.
Modi also underlined the growing stature of Indian athletes globally, particularly in disciplines such as boxing, and credited initiatives like the Khelo India programme and enhanced competitive exposure for nurturing young talent.
Emphasising the need to build a strong sporting culture, he said infrastructure alone cannot ensure success.
“Sports infrastructure is one thing, but the country achieves medals when a sports culture is built in the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister lauded athletes who dedicated their victories to their coaches, families and the nation, and praised the contribution of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in supporting emerging talent.
He also reviewed the development of sports infrastructure across various regions and commended the role of Khelo India in helping athletes progress from grassroots competitions to international podiums.
Expressing confidence in the athletes’ future performances, Modi said, “Rest assured, in the future too you will be victorious and once again we will meet right here.”
The Prime Minister also extended birthday wishes to a multi-time medallist present during the interaction and encouraged all athletes to maintain their momentum and continue striving for excellence.
“He who plays, blooms,” Modi remarked while blessing the contingent for its continued success.
