Bandipora: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, on Monday launched a two-day Integrated Communication and Outreach Programme (ICOP) on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan at Government Higher Secondary School, Gadakhud, Sumbal in Bandipora district.
The programme was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Kanwal Chib, and witnessed participation from students, teachers, parents, officials and members of the local community.
Resource persons from the Health, Social Welfare, School Education, Police and District Administration departments sensitised participants about the causes and consequences of substance abuse, besides highlighting measures related to prevention, treatment, counselling and rehabilitation.
Speaking on the occasion, Field Publicity Officer, CBC Srinagar, Naseer Ahmad Rather highlighted the role of CBC in disseminating information about flagship programmes and welfare initiatives of the Government of India. He stressed the importance of awareness and community participation in tackling substance abuse and underlined the role of parents and teachers in identifying early signs of addiction among youth.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Indu Kanwal Chib reiterated the district administration’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking. She urged youth to channel their energies towards education, sports and other constructive pursuits, and said awareness, prevention, counselling, rehabilitation and collective social responsibility were key to tackling the drug menace.
Chief Education Officer Bandipora, M. Rafiq Mir, highlighted the importance of education and a supportive environment in shaping responsible and informed youth. Station House Officer, Sumbal, Mohammad Saleem Mir, briefed participants on the role of law enforcement in curbing drug trafficking and explained relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Medical Officer Dr Reyaz Ahmad spoke about the adverse health consequences of substance abuse and stressed the importance of counselling and timely intervention. He also informed participants about the Government of India’s Tele-MANAS mental health support initiative and helpline 14416. Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, Sumbal, Fayaz Ahmad Lone, elaborated on welfare and support mechanisms available for affected individuals and families.
Field Publicity Officer, CBC Anantnag, Shahid Mohammad Lone reaffirmed CBC’s commitment to spreading the message of a drug-free society through sustained outreach programmes in schools and communities, and called for a united effort by all stakeholders to address substance abuse.
The programme also featured a photo exhibition on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, cultural performances by empanelled cultural troupes and student participation in speech, painting and quiz competitions aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
Participants also took a pledge to stay away from drugs, discourage drug trafficking and contribute towards building a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir and a drug-free India.
