Srinagar: Police arrested seven alleged drug peddlers in separate operations across Shopian, Pulwama, Kathua, Jammu and Doda districts and booked a habitual offender under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Kathua, officials said on Sunday.

In south Kashmir, police arrested two alleged drug peddlers following the recovery of contraband in separate cases.

At Manihal Crossing in Shopian, police intercepted a suspicious person and recovered 44 grams of charas from his possession. The accused was identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, a resident of Anantnag district. A case has been registered under relevant sections of law.

In Pulwama, a police team from Newa Police Post intercepted a motorcycle at Checkpora Bypass Bridge. During the search, 27 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup were recovered from beneath the seat of the vehicle. The rider, identified as Adil Bashir Ganie of Dangerpora, Pulwama, was arrested on the spot.

Meanwhile, police in Kathua booked Davinder Kumar, a resident of Drallan village in Nagri tehsil, under the PSA and lodged him in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, Jammu.

According to police, Kumar was a habitual offender involved in several criminal activities and had three cases registered against him, including two related to attempted murder. Following the preparation of a dossier, the Kathua District Magistrate issued detention orders under the PSA.

Police also arrested five alleged drug peddlers in separate operations across Kathua, Jammu and Doda districts.

Sharat Singh and Mohd Makhan were arrested during checking at Ghatti and Lakhanpur in Kathua after police recovered six grams and seven grams of heroin, respectively, from their possession.

In another case, Naresh Kumar, a resident of Chhattisgarh, was arrested at Hiranagar in Kathua with 381 grams of ganja while he was returning to his rented accommodation at Kootah Morh.

Two more accused, Anshu Bhagat and Randhir Singh, were arrested during checking at Badhyal Brahmana in Jammu’s R S Pura area and Baggar in Doda’s Assar area. Police recovered 10 grams of heroin from Bhagat and 150 grams of charas from Singh.

Cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have been registered at the concerned police stations, and further investigations are underway.
