KULGAM: Police have arrested a man from West Bengal and recovered nearly 1.9 kilograms of suspected ganja along with an electronic weighing machine during a night checking operation in Kulgam district.
The arrest was made during the intervening night at a checkpoint established at Chatabal in Kulgam, where police intercepted the suspect during routine checking.
The accused has been identified as Rakib Ahmad Khan, son of Mofjal Khan, a resident of Chandbita in West Bengal.
During the search, police recovered approximately 1.887 kilograms of suspected ganja from his possession. An electronic weighing machine was also seized.
Police said the case has an inter-state dimension as the accused, a resident of West Bengal, was apprehended in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
A case under FIR No. 111/2026 has been registered at Police Station Kulgam under Sections 8 and 20 of the NDPS Act, and further investigation has been initiated.
Investigators are examining the source and intended destination of the recovered contraband and whether the accused was acting independently or as part of a larger network, police said.
