Satish Sharma stresses stronger digital infrastructure, youth engagement through sports

Highlights need for resilient connectivity, cybersecurity and sports culture

Srinagar: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology Satish Sharma on Monday highlighted the government’s initiatives for strengthening digital infrastructure, promoting technological innovation and encouraging youth participation in sports across Jammu and Kashmir.

The minister was speaking at a one-day seminar organised by Institution of Engineers India Jammu and Kashmir State Centre in connection with World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2026 on the theme “Digital Lifelines – Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World.”

The seminar was attended by engineers, policymakers, telecom professionals, experts and public representatives who deliberated on digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, broadband connectivity and inclusive technological development.

Addressing the gathering, Satish Sharma said robust digital connectivity has become the backbone of governance and socio-economic development.

He said the government is focused on ensuring equitable access to digital services and strengthening communication infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir to bridge the digital divide.

The minister stressed the importance of adopting modern technologies and building secure and resilient digital systems capable of addressing future challenges.

He also appreciated the role of professional institutions in promoting technical awareness and innovation.

Later, Satish Sharma appreciated the successful organisation of an indoor games competition by the Red Team aimed at promoting sportsmanship, youth engagement and healthy recreational activities.

The event witnessed participation in games including carrom, chess, table tennis and badminton.

The minister said sports play an important role in shaping youth personality by promoting discipline, confidence, leadership and teamwork.

He added that indoor and outdoor sports activities provide constructive avenues for youth engagement and contribute towards physical and mental well-being.

The competition concluded with a prize distribution ceremony for winners and outstanding performers.

The programme began with an introduction by Irfan Ahmad Reshi, who highlighted the role of communication technologies in governance, education, healthcare and public service delivery.

Ferdous Ahad Bhat stressed the need for resilient and inclusive digital ecosystems and stronger cybersecurity frameworks, especially in remote and underserved areas.

The technical session featured a keynote presentation by Feroze Jalali Malla on data protection, cybersecurity and digital trust.

Masharib Gul Mufti also spoke on the expansion of digital connectivity infrastructure under the BharatNet initiative in rural and remote areas.
