NC leader Masoodi asks President to ensure J&K representation in SC

Srinagar: National Conference leader and former high court judge Hasnain Masoodi on Monday asked President Draupadi Murmu to give representation to Jammu and Kashmir on the Supreme Court’s expanded bench strength.

Masoodi, who was a member of the Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024, wrote a letter to the President to this effect as well.

“The increase in the number of judges of the Supreme Court by the Hon’ble President of India is a welcome step. As J&K has remained unrepresented in the highest constitutional court of the country since 2017, I request @rashtrapatibhvn to give representation to J&K in the Supreme Court,” Masoodi, an MLA in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, said in a post on X.

In the letter, Masoodi said, “The increase in the number of judges in the Hon’ble Supreme Court to 38 is a welcome step and bound to be hailed by the general public across the country. The huge pendency of cases before law courts at all levels has literally clogged the justice delivery system.”

He said the decision to increase the number of judges in the top court in this backdrop is an important milestone.

“However, I deem it my duty to submit that Jammu and Kashmir has gone unrepresented in the top constitutional court since 2017. It is high time that Jammu and Kashmir gets representation in the top Constitutional court of the country,” he wrote.

Masoodi said such a move will give a sense of empowerment and participation to the 15 million people of Jammu and Kashmir.
