Srinagar: In a sweeping, multi-district push under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan, J&K Police on Tuesday stepped up enforcement and awareness measures, targeting illegal cultivation, drug trafficking networks, and public sensitisation across several districts.
Police destroyed illicit poppy crops in multiple districts, registering cases under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.
In Anantnag, Police Station Kokernag acted on specific inputs and detected illegal opium cultivation at Narupora Chek. A case (FIR No. 37/2025) was registered, and the crop spread over about three marlas of land was destroyed following due legal procedure.
In Sopore, Police Station Bomai registered FIR No. 33/2026 after receiving inputs about poppy cultivation in Eddiepora. A joint team comprising police, excise, agriculture, horticulture, and revenue officials carried out a destruction drive in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, seizing samples for further investigation.
Pulwama Police also reported a major action in Monghama village, where illegal poppy cultivation by an individual was detected. FIR No. 69/2026 was registered, the accused was arrested, and the crop destroyed on the spot.
Similar action was taken in Baramulla’s Wailoo area (FIR No. 94/2026), while in Tangmarg, two separate cases (FIR Nos. 27/2026 and 28/2026) were registered after illicit cultivation was detected and destroyed in Khotipora and Sagribatpora.

In Sopore, police booked seven habitual offenders under the PIT NDPS Act after securing detention orders. The accused, involved in multiple cases, have been lodged in various jails including Udhampur, Bhadarwah, Kot Bhalwal, and Amphalla.
Meanwhile, in Shopian, authorities demolished illegal assets linked to narcotics activity. Apple trees planted on state land by an accused involved in an earlier NDPS case were cut down during a joint operation with revenue officials.
Pulwama Police carried out extensive search operations, including a CASO in Kakapora and intensified vehicle checking with K-9 squad deployment. Medical shops were also inspected, with one store sealed for violations related to handling restricted drugs.
Alongside enforcement, police ramped up awareness efforts across districts.
In Baramulla, anti-drug programmes were held in schools, including Government Higher Secondary School Bandi-Payeen, while a large rally in Gulmarg saw participation from traders and stakeholders.
In Budgam, youth counselling sessions and medical camps were organised in Chadoora and Beerwah, focusing on mental health, early warning signs, and de-addiction awareness.
Ganderbal witnessed awareness rallies and programmes in Hariganiwan, Safapora and Sonamarg, with officers engaging directly with students and the public.
In Shopian and Kulgam, multiple school-based awareness sessions and rallies were conducted, encouraging students to adopt a drug-free lifestyle and act as ambassadors of change.
Police also organised Thana Diwas and PCPG meetings across Baramulla and Kulgam, providing platforms for public interaction and grievance redressal. Issues such as electricity supply, road infrastructure, irrigation, and wildlife concerns were raised and documented for follow-up.
J&K Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, emphasizing that strict enforcement will continue alongside community engagement.
Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and report any information related to drug trafficking, illegal cultivation, or substance abuse, as part of a collective effort to build a drug-free society.
