Srinagar: President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Farooq Abdullah on Monday reiterated that restoration of Article 370 remains the party’s central political agenda.

Addressing a gathering in Budgam, Abdullah said the party’s foundation rests on the sacrifices of its cadre and the martyrs of Kashmir, who, he said, laid down their lives for dignity, self-respect and freedom from oppression.

Highlighting the party’s historical role, he said the first democratically elected government led by the National Conference introduced landmark reforms, particularly under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He credited these reforms, including land ownership rights, with reducing poverty, deprivation and illiteracy, and transforming the socio-economic landscape of the region.

Abdullah said these measures empowered ordinary citizens and helped secure internal autonomy for the erstwhile state. However, he alleged that these constitutional safeguards were gradually eroded and ultimately abrogated in 2019, with the support of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party.

Reaffirming the party’s stance, he said there would be no compromise on the demand for restoration of Article 370 and that the National Conference will continue to raise the issue on all platforms.

Stressing the importance of restoring statehood, Abdullah said it is crucial for ensuring that an elected government can function effectively without unnecessary constraints. He warned that a dual system of governance in a sensitive region like Jammu and Kashmir could lead to instability and administrative challenges.

He also said that assurances had been given by the Centre regarding restoration of statehood after elections, but expressed concern over the delay. Referring to judicial directions, he added that there is a need for timely action to restore full democratic functioning.

Abdullah further said that the present National Conference-led government remains committed to public welfare, with ministers and legislators working to address people’s grievances.

Earlier, he visited Gogoo in Budgam to offer condolences to the family of Engineer Abdul Hamid Bhat. He was accompanied by senior party leaders, who joined him in offering prayers and expressing solidarity with the bereaved family.
