Srinagar: On the occasion of World Heritage Day, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday called for the protection and promotion of Jammu and Kashmir’s rich cultural legacy, urging people to not only visit heritage sites but also understand their historical and cultural significance.
In a statement issued from the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, Abdullah said Jammu and Kashmir has long remained a vibrant centre of cultural heritage and a meeting point of great civilisations because of its proximity to the ancient Silk Road.
He said this confluence of cultures and artistic traditions has created a unique legacy of art, craft and architecture that is yet to receive the global recognition it deserves.
Abdullah said tourism promotion in Jammu and Kashmir should not remain limited to its scenic mountains and valleys, but should also focus on cultural tourism.
He urged the government and concerned departments to highlight the region’s forts in Jammu, shrines in Kashmir, museums, mosques and temples to attract people interested in archaeology, heritage and culture.
He said Jammu and Kashmir offers immense opportunities for heritage tourism and called for dedicated efforts to bring these sites and structures to the forefront.
Abdullah also appealed to the government to ensure that heritage sites are protected from natural disasters, including fire and other hazards.
He stressed the need for proper evaluation, management and systematic preservation of shrines and other historic structures across the Union Territory.
The National Conference leader further urged the School Education and Higher Education departments to include visits to heritage sites in their curricula and extracurricular activities so that younger generations develop a deeper appreciation of the region’s cultural legacy.
