Handwara: Ulema, scholars, Imams, civil society activists, and NGOs today expressed deep concern over drug abuse among the youth in Kashmir, emphasizing the need for collective measures to combat this growing menace.
A seminar was held at the Community Center in Kralgund to address the alarming rise in drug addiction and discuss issues related to women in society. The seminar was presided over by members of Abu Baseer Karwaan J&K, including Mufti Rayees Ahmad.
In his inaugural speech, Mufti Hilal highlighted the rampant drug abuse affecting both boys and girls in the Valley, stressing the easy availability of drugs as a significant concern. “This issue needs to be addressed by all of us to protect our future generations and safeguard our society,” he said.
Mufti Hilal added, “The seminar has been convened to collectively address this pressing issue. It is disturbing that, despite being a Muslim society guided by the great teachings of Islam, which grants women dignity and guarantees their rights, we continue to witness cases of domestic violence, suicides, and other forms of abuse and discrimination against women.”
He emphasized the role of Ulema, Imams, and Khateebs in raising awareness about women’s rights as prescribed in Islam and fostering respect for women in society.
During the program, speakers deliberated on the ill effects of drug abuse and its treatment, urging participants to take collective responsibility in combating social evils. Students were advised to avoid drug use and other harmful activities, instead focusing on excelling in education, sports, and other constructive fields. The audience was also educated on the causes, consequences, and treatment of addiction, with an emphasis on the role of rehabilitation centers and therapeutic interventions.
Speakers noted that drug addiction is becoming increasingly prevalent among the younger generation, leading to complex societal and health challenges. They pointed out that students, in particular, are vulnerable to this menace, necessitating awareness programs in educational institutions.
The program was attended by prominent figures, including Mr. Ghulam Rasool Bhat (Tehsildar, Kralgund) as the chief guest and Mr. Naveed Altaf (BDO, Qaziabad) as the guest of honor. Other notable attendees included Dr. Abdul Majid (DySP), Waseem Ahmad Shah (SHO, Kralgund), and members of Abu Baseer Karwaan such as Mufti Shakir Ahmad, Mufti Irfan, Mufti Asif, and Qari Owais.
Faculty and management members from the Elite Institute of Excellence, Kralgund, including Er. Tawseef Nazir Lone, Bilal Ahmad Malik, Javaid Ahmad, and Jafar Fayaz, also participated alongside their students. The seminar was moderated by Mufti Rayees Ahmad.
