Kousarnag, also spelled as Kausar Nag, is the largest alpine lake in the Kashmir Valley. Nestled in the lap of the Pir Panjal Range in the Kulgam district, this magnificent lake stretches over 3 kilometers in length and has a maximum width of 0.75 kilometers. Its pristine beauty, crystal-clear waters, and serene surroundings make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Kousarnag is a hidden gem in the Kashmir Valley, offering a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and spiritual tranquility. The journey to this alpine lake is a test of endurance and a reward for the soul. Whether you are an avid trekker, a nature enthusiast, or someone seeking solace in the lap of nature, Kousarnag promises an experience that will linger in your memories forever.

Kousarnag is situated at an elevation of approximately 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level. The journey to this enchanting lake begins from the picturesque Aharbal waterfall, a popular tourist spot known for its cascading waters and lush greenery. The trek from Aharbal to Kousarnag is an adventure in itself, offering trekkers a chance to experience the raw beauty of Kashmir’s landscapes.

The trek to Kousarnag Is a blend of challenge and beauty, making it an unforgettable experience for those who embark on it. The trail winds through the scenic meadows of Kungwattan, known for their vibrant flora and fauna. Trekkers are greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, dense forests, and sparkling streams that add to the allure of the journey.

The trek Is moderately difficult and requires a good level of physical fitness. However, the breathtaking vistas, fresh mountain air, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the lake make every step worthwhile. The route is dotted with charming camping spots, where trekkers can rest and soak in the natural beauty.

Kousarnag’s crystal-clear waters reflect the sky and the surrounding snow-capped peaks, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The lake’s serene ambiance is further enhanced by the tranquility of the surrounding meadows and the distant calls of Himalayan birds. The trek routes are accessible, and the chances of encountering snow are minimal. However, the weather in high-altitude regions can be unpredictable, so it is advisable to be well-prepared for sudden changes.
