Srinagar: Police have busted a “marriage scam” by arresting a fraudster in Baramulla, a police spokesman informed Monday.

He said Police Post Delina had received a written complaint from a resident of Hudpora Khaitangan stating therein that his brother’s marriage ceremony was scheduled to be held on December 31, 2023 and they were supposed to get the bride from Thanamandi Rajouri.

Since the two families didn’t know each other, they were in touch only through the middle-man named Sharif Ahmad Gaasi, son of Ali Mohammad Gaasi of Kakapora Pulwama, who had arranged the marriage.

The complaint stated that the middleman Gaasi despite having grabbed an amount of Rs 1.18 lakhs from the family for arranging this marriage, was not responding to their phone calls, police said adding that a case under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Baramulla.

During investigations, Gaasi was traced out from Srinagar. He has been arrested and shifted to Police Station Baramulla where he remains in custody. Further investigation of the case is going on, police said.
