Baramulla: Residents of Malpora village in the Narvaw area of Baramulla district are up in arms against Jal Shakti Department Baramulla over a defunct water filtration plant that was supposed to supply pure drinking water to the villagers but it is full of slit and dirt.

Locals alleged that they are compelled to drink contaminated drinking water because the Jal Shakti Department despite making significant investments in filtration has failed to make it functional and it has remained defunct for the past 10 years besides the source pipe was not connected to it.

According to local residents, accumulated waste and dirt from the surrounding area caused the plant to become filthy, rendering its water unfit for consumption. It needs proper covering and connection of pipe from the water source.

When contacted AEE Jal Shakti Department Baramulla, Imtiyaz Ahmad, admitted that the plant remained non-functional because it required covering with mesh because there are apprehensions of wild animals falling into it.

“The work has been tendered out and very soon. The other necessary measures for the filtration plant have been included in the Jal Jeevan Mission. The contractor has been directed to start the work on priority,” he added.
