Baramulla: A minor girl died after slipping into an irrigation canal in Perniya area of Boniyar in Baramulla district.

An official told KNO that a minor girl identified as Rukaya Bashir daughter of Bashir Ahmad Ganaie resident of Nowpora Jagir slipped into the canal.

The class 9 student was waiting for school bus along Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric power Project (LJHP) canal when she slipped and fell into the canal, he said.

Soon after the incident, a search operation to retrieve her body was launched and body was retrieved.  Water supply of the canal was stopped and it helped in fishing out the body, said the official.

He said the body was handed over to her family after medico legal formalities.

Tehsildar Boniyar, Vikramjeet Singh said fencing would be carried out along the LJHP, especially at accident prone sites soon.
