80 more people test positive for COVID-19 in J-K; tally climbs to 1,569
55-year-old woman dies, death toll rises to 21
Srinagar: As many as 80 more people, including a doctor, tested positive for COVID-19 in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, taking the total number of cases in the union territory to 1,569, officials said.
While 21 of these cases are from Jammu, 59 are from the Kashmir region, they said.
The 80 fresh cases include a doctor from Srinagar who is posted in Bandipora and a pregnant woman from Kulgam, according to the officials.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir has now reached 1,569, they said.
Of these, 1,330 have been recorded in Kashmir and 239 in the Jammu region, they added.
There are 774 active cases in the union territory — 609 in Kashmir and 165 in Jammu. A total of 774 patients have recovered, they said.
The union territory has recorded 21 COVID-19 related deaths so far.
Meanwhile, a woman from south Kashmir’s Anantnag district who had tested positive for COVID-19 died at a hospital here on Saturday, taking the union territory’s death toll to 21, an official said.
The woman, 55, from Botengo area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag died at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here, hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Farooq Jan said.
He said the woman was suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with sepsis. She died of multiple organ failure.
She was admitted to SKIMS on May 06 in a critical condition and had tested positive for COVID-19, he said.
According to the daily media bulletin on novel coronavirus (Covid-19), out of 1569 positive cases, 774 are Active Positive, 774 have recovered and 21 have died; two in Jammu division and 19 in Kashmir division.
Moreover, 54 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and discharged from various hospitals, 02 from Jammu division and 52 from Kashmir division.
The bulletin further said that out of 124074 test results available, 122505 samples have been tested as negative till May 23, 2020.
Additionally, till date 130197 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 32056 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 74 in hospital quarantine, 774 in hospital isolation and 26686 under home surveillance. Besides, 70586 persons have completed their surveillance period.
Providing district-wise breakup, the bulletin said that Bandipora has 139 positive cases (including one case reported today) with nine active positive, 129 recovered, one death; Srinagar has 179 positive cases (including three cases reported today) with 54 active positive, 119 recovered (including 20 cases recovered today), six deaths; Anantnag district has 272 positive cases (including six cases reported today), with 159 active positive, 109 recovered, four deaths; Baramulla has 136 positive cases (including four cases reported today) with 34 active positive, 98 recovered (including seven cases recovered today), four deaths; Shopian has 127 positive cases with 21 active positive, 106 recovered (including four cases recovered today); Kupwara has 164 positive cases (including 36 cases reported today) with 94 active positive, 70 recovered (including 21 cases recovered today); Budgam has 63 positive cases, with 26 active positive and 35 recovered cases and two deaths; Ganderbal has 27 positive cases with 12 active cases and 15 recoveries; Kulgam has 198 positive cases (including five reported today), with 184 active positive and 12 recoveries and two death and Pulwama reported 25 positive cases (including four cases reported today) with 16 active positive, nine recovered.
Similarly, Jammu has 72 positive cases (including four cases reported today) with 40 active positive cases and 31 recoveries and one death; Udhampur has 33 positive cases with 11 active positive case, 21 recovered and one death; Samba has 20 positive cases with 13 active positive and seven recoveries; Rajouri has 10 positive cases with six active positive cases and four recovered; Kathua has 41 positive cases (including one case reported today) with 35 active positive and six recovered (including two cases recovered today); Kishtwar has eight positive case (including one case reported today) with seven active positive case and one recovered; Ramban has 44 positive cases (including 14 cases reported today) with 43 active positive and one recovered; Reasi has four positive cases with three active positive and one recovered, Poonch has six active positive cases including one case reported today while Doda has one active positive case.
The bulletin said that the breakup represents districts from which the patients have been traced or are ordinarily residing.
The advisory has informed the public in general that all passengers/returnees coming to UT of J&K, whether by road, rail or air will have to compulsorily undergo a COVID-19 test following which they will be under administrative quarantine for 14 days, if their test result is negative they will be sent for home quarantine and if positive they would be sent to a COVID hospital for recovery and treatment.
“People are strongly advised to avoid going to crowded places, as they are more likely to come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19 and it is more difficult to maintain physical distance with others at these places,” the bulletin said. As a measure for social distancing in public places and workplaces wearing a face cover is compulsory, it added.
The bulletin explained that early detection of COVID-19 can prevent the spread of disease — so we need to be responsible for the well-being of ourselves and everyone around us. “Not disclosing symptoms could put life of individuals and their families at risk. In case of symptoms like fever, cough and difficulty in breathing report early. Do not fear, call COVID-19 helpline numbers and seek medical advice,” it said.
Advisory has further exhorted upon the people not to step out of home, unless absolutely necessary. “If you have to move out for unavoidable reasons, ensure that you wear a mask and practice social distancing, personal hygiene and frequent handwashing with soap and water.”
In case of any emergency people can avail free ambulance services 24×7 at their doorsteps by calling on toll-free number 108 while as pregnant women and sick infants can avail free ambulance services by dialling toll-free number 102.

Public has been advised to strictly follow the advisories issued by the government from time to time and rely only on the information released by the government through the daily media bulletin to print and electronic media.
People were also advised to refrain from spreading rumours and pay no heed to them at the same time.
