Five more test positive in Kashmir; toll mounts to 38 in UT
Srinagar, Mar 29: Kashmir Valley recorded its second COVID-19 death on Sunday while as five people tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 38.
Victim, a man hailing from the Tangmarg area in Baramulla district, had tested positive for the coronavirus at SMHS Hospital on Saturday where he was undergoing treatment, officials said.
The officials said he was shifted to the Chest Diseases Hospital after testing positive but died early Sunday morning.
With this the death toll due to the pandemic in the union territory has risen to two.
A 65-year-old man had died of coronavirus on Thursday.
Meanwhile, of the five fresh positive cases, two each were reported from Srinagar and Budgam districts, while another from north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
“Five more positive cases confirmed in Kashmir,” government spokesperson Rohit Kansal said in a tweet.
Of the total 38 cases, 29 have been reported from the Valley, while nine from Jammu region.
Two patients, both from the Vvalley, died, while two have recovered.
Meanwhile, restrictions on the movement and assembly of people in Kashmir to contain the spread of the coronavirus were intensified on Sunday as the Valley recorded its second COVID-19 death, a day after 13 fresh cases were confirmed.
The restrictions on the movement and assembly of people in Kashmir continued for the 11th consecutive day on Sunday, officials said.
The officials said the curbs across the Valley have been tightened to minimise the movement of the people in order to contain the spread of the virus.
The tighter restrictions came in the wake of the death of second COVID-19 patient early Sunday.
Most of the roads in the Valley have been sealed off and barriers have been erected at several places by the security forces to check the unwanted movement of the people and to enforce the lockdown for containing the spread of the coronavirus, the officials said.
The administration has asked the people to cooperate with it and warned of action for violating the prohibitory orders.
The authorities at several places have sought help from ‘Imams’ (clerics) to appeal to the people to stay indoors.
The clerics had asked the people to offer prayers at home and avoid the mosques.
Meanwhile, the government in its daily COVID-19 bulletin today said that that 6465 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been put under surveillance and, so far, 38 cases (34 active positive, 02 recovered and 02 deaths) have tested positive in Jammu and Kashmir.
According bulletin 3260 persons have been kept under home quarantine while as 307 are in hospital quarantine.
Persons who are under home surveillance stand at 2163 while as 735 persons have completed their 28-day surveillance period.
The bulletin further said that 588 samples have been sent for testing of which 542 tested as negative while as 8 reports are awaited till March 29, 2020.
