DDC Budgam inspects Flood Spill Channel at Shariefabad, Bemina
Directs concerned to expedite dredging work
BUDGAM, JUNE 15: District Development Commissioner, Budgam Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar accompanied by SE Hydraulics and Ex.En Flood Control Division Narbal and other concerned, today inspected works on flood spill channel in the district and reviewed its dredging, axing of trees, and evacuation of encroached land on both sides of the flood spill channel.
During the visit, it was informed that an amount of Rs 399 crore stands sanctioned for the works along the channel and work on the project has been started at different spots on the flood channel.
During the inspection, the DDC was informed that 43000 trees were axed on both sides of the flood spill channel, besides seven hundred fifty-eight kanals of encroached land was also retrieved.
The DDC was also apprised that presently number of excavators are on the job, besides sufficient manpower has also been engaged to accelerate the work. It was given out that with the completion of this project, the flood channel will have the carrying capacity of 35000 cusecs of water at the entry point at Padshahi Bagh and can discharge of 41000 cusecs at the exit point at Wullar.
During the tour, the DDC was informed that with the completion of phase first of the ambitious project, carrying capacity will increase to 9100 cusecs at entry level and a discharge of 30000 cusecs at exit point against present carrying capacity of 4000 cusecs at entry level and 20500 cusecs at exit point. It was said that presently an amount of Rs. 43 crore have been envisaged for various works under execution from Bemina to Hokersar. Moreover, it was also given out that 70 per cent work on the bridge under execution of JKPCC constructed on the Channel Shariefabad has been completed and the remaining work on the project is going on in full swing. The bridge is coming at the project cost of Rs, 20 crores.
The project when completed will be a major cushion against the threat of floods and will greatly increase the carrying capacity and minimize the impacts of floods in a significant way.
The DDC directed the concerned authorities to expedite the work on war footing and deploy more excavators and other required machinery immediately on the channel stretch and submit work report on daily basis.
