Youth killed in Sumbal after tree branch hits him

Hajin, May 29: Protests erupted in Sumbal town against administration for failing to chop off branches of decades-old Chinar trees after a youth was killed when a decaying branch of fell upon him.

The slain youth was identified as 25-year-old Imtiyaz Ahmad Kumar, son of Ghulam Qadir Kumar, a resident of Asham area of Sumbal town.

While strolling in the area, the slain youth was hit when strong winds smashed a Chinar tree branch which fell on him, resulting in his on-spot death.

The tragic death triggered strong protest in the area as locals alleged that despite repeated pleas, authorities didn’t bother to chop down hollow chinar trees in the area.

A protestor Nazir Ahmed said “There are several decaying Chinar trees near CHC Hospital Sumbal which pose grave threat to lives and property.”

Sources said locals have decided to observe a complete shutdown tomorrow against tragic death of the young man.
