SWEEPERS CALL OFF STRIKE IN SOPORE

Sopore, May 27: Sweepers of Municipal Council (MC) Sopore called off their strike on Monday after being assured by the Director Local Urban Bodies that all their demands will be met.

According to a group of sweepers, who claim support of 120 other sweepers, they had gone on an indefinite strike as they have been demanding regularization of their services since 2000, release of GP Funds.

“We called off our strike only after receiving a proper assurance from Director Local Urban Bodies, who visited Sopore and listened to our grievance,” they said adding, “If our demands are not met in a stipulated time then we will have no choice but to go on strike again.”

Speaking to Kashmir Images Director Urban Local Bodies, Farooq Ahmad, said: “I visited Sopore yesterday and listened to the grievances of sweepers. I have assured them that the department will resolve all their issues in a phased manner.”

“The sweepers called off their strike on my request,” director added.

Pertinently, Consolidated Sweepers of MC Sopore went on a strike on 15th of this month as they have been demanding the regularization of their services since 2000, release of GP fund.
