Sajad Farooq Rather founder of Kashmir Law Circle spoke about the sexual harassment and the ways to eradicate the same.

He said,  “Education and awareness can play a big role in preventing sexual harassment. India’s female population is 48 percent but woman just hold 12 percent seats of National Legislature. Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia and Spain are some of the safest countries where women hold over 31 percent seats in National Legislature. Anti-sexual harassment cells should be constituted in Schools, Colleges, Universities, Working places and other govt/private institutions. It’s about time everyone learns to treat women with respect and dignity. Indian government with more women in legislature could better protect Indian women by passing comprehensive laws that defend women from abuse and help victims recover.”

“Lawyers and Law students can play a very crucial role in order to overcome the menace of sexual harassment by giving well awareness to females about their rights and organise legal awareness programs related to anti-sexual harassment at working places, Schools, Colleges and Universities,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion Mir Sofia a law student highlighted the rights of woman in Islam.

She discussed about the rights of women mentioned in Surah Nisa of Qur’an and highlighted the six category rights of women in Islam.

Another Law Student Syed Zarqa addressed the issues of domestic violence and ways to tackle it.

“Domestic violence is just not the problem of lower and middle classes, it is prevalent among prominent people. Domestic violence can be resolved with the help of NGO’s, councilors, Police who will be allowed to council a woman with regard to the course of action,” she said.

Bilquiss an activist from J&K Woman Helpline 181 also spoke on the occasion about the helpline numbers for woman for their protection.

“181 is not a referral service or a call centre. It is a friend of women in distress. It has facilities to provide temporary shelter in situations of crisis. It provides public interface of 181 WHL at district level,” she said.

Other speakers included Suhail Mehraj and Younis Ahad.
