Srinagar, Mar 08: Terming Kathua rape-and-murder a ‘blot’ on society, State Women’s Commission (SWC) chairperson, Nayeema Ahmad Mehjoor on International Women’s Day today asserted that the incident has tarnished humanity, and  should not be ‘politicized’.

“I don’t know who is politicizing the incident; what I personally and on behalf of my commission believe is that Kathua incident is a blot on the society. The incident which tarnished humanity should not be politicized at all,” Mehjoor told reporters on the sidelines of a function held in connection with the International Women’s Day at Kothibagh Higher Secondary School here.

She said that the incident must not be linked with politics and the accused should be treated as accused and crime committed by him shall be viewed as crime.

“Let people play politics over the issue, but I want to make it clear that no one is above law and that the accused deserves harshest punishment. This is a gruesome act, let law take its course,” she added.

Commenting over the arrest of some policemen by the Crime Branch of police for destroying vital evidences linked with the case, she said police by arresting its own men has set an example.

Describing the plight of Kunan and Poshpora rape victim’s as unfortunate, she said that the State government and State Women’s Commission are “tirelessly working for their rehabilitation”.

“We cannot change the history and I think whatever happened in Kunan and Poshpora villages in past was overbearing. We wish to deliver justice to them and do their rehabilitation and counseling,” said SWC chairperson.

Mehjoor while praising the courage of Kashmiri women said, no other women in entire world can bear what women of Kashmir have witnessed.

“We try to identify the issues confronting females. They should bring their issues into the notice of authorities having role in policy-making to ensure their representation. Our daughters have to move ahead and feel secure,” she said.

She also appealed the women-folk to come forward and play their role in the government and Women’s Commission as well.
