Srinagar: The New of Islamic Calendar, Muharram-ul-Haram, will commence in Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
This announcement was made by the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, here on Monday.
The Grand Mufti said that no authentic or credible reports of crescent moon sighting were received from any part of the Jammu and Kashmir on Monday evening and therefore, the first day of Muharram-ul-Haram will be observed on June 17, Wednesday.
He extended greetings to the Muslim Ummah on the advent of the Islamic New Year, praying for peace, prosperity and communal harmony across Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
The Grand Mufti also highlighted the spiritual significance of Muharram, urging people to draw inspiration from its core values of sacrifice, patience and righteousness. He further appealed for unity, mutual respect and collective well-being in society.
It is important to mention, Muharram-ul-Haram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide. The month is observed with solemnity and reflection, particularly commemorating the values of faith, patience and sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (RA) and his family and comrades at Karbala to defeat the evil.
