The protesters said that government approved 40 new degree colleges in J&K recently but Ganderbal was neglected.  “Most of the people in Wakura Tehsil are backward and poor; they can’t afford to attend far off colleges in Ganderbal and Srinagar. Wakura is more than 16 KM away from Degree College Ganderbal,” they said.

A local resident, Abdul Rehman, said: “Last year during public darbar in Ganderbal. Former CM assured to establish a degree college in Wakura.A divisor to Governor also assured us the same but when the list of 40 new degree colleges was announced, we were disappointed to learn that our area was not in the list.”

Protesters further said that Wakura stations hundreds of schools including seven higher secondary schools. “A good number of students pass every year from each higher secondary here and they have to seek admission in degree college Ganderbal which is located far away.”
