Govt imposed civic polls in an unfavorable situation: Tarigami

Srinagar, January 21: While expressing serious concern over the precarious power situation in Kashmir valley, CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Monday said that while governments come and go, electricity woes have always continue unabated.

In a press release issued here, Tarigami said that even when Kashmir had enough water resources, those claiming solving all issues have failed to settle this small issue for decades. “During summers, due to power woes people in Jammu suffer and in winters people in Kashmir valley have to bear the brunt of power crisis,” Tarigami has said.

He further said that while the Governor administration was claiming improvement in governance, the reality however indicates that the power situation was unchanged. “There is no improvement as power supply in Kashmir has become like a miscall. Isn’t it any priority for the government to provide uninterrupted power supply to people in this harsh winter,” he questioned.

Stating that no power schedule was being followed on ground and even metered areas were facing long and unscheduled power cuts, he said that people were totally annoyed by this situation while those living in rural and far flung areas were totally without electricity. The recent snowfall has aggravated the crisis and people in rural areas are facing worst power crisis, he added.

Castigating Power Development Department (PDD) over its failure in creating a buffer stock of electricity transformers at district and divisional levels to address the situation surfaced due to damaged transformers, Tarigami maintained that the step-down transformers installed in every neighborhood develop technical snag, especially during winter months, and the consumers are left helpless.
