Residents of Safanagri village demand replacement of decayed wooden electric poles

Shopian, September 17: Residents of Safanagri village in South Kashmir’s Shopian district are up in arms against the Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to replace the decayed wooden electric in their area.

According to the locals, the wooden electric poles were installed by the villagers themselves as PDD has failed to install sophisticated electric poles in the village.

They said that the dangling electric wires fixed to these wooden poles are posing a constant threat to the life and property. “We have approached the officials of the concerned department a number of times but they have always turned a blind eye towards our genuine,” they added.

One of the residents of the village, Mohd Yousuf Wani, said, “Most of the electric wires are tied with the trees here which poses a threat of electrocution and short circuits during the prevalence of high-speed gusty winds.”

When contacted Assistant Executive Engineer PDD Sub-Division Chitragam he said, “Our department is facing a scarcity of funds and as soon as there will be an availability of funds we will replace all the decayed poles in the area.”
