SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday concluded and launched a series of sports initiatives across Kashmir under the Civic Action Programme (CAP), with events in Sopore, Handwara and Ganderbal aimed at promoting youth participation in sports and community engagement.
In Sopore, the J&K Police Sports Festival 2026-27 concluded at Khushal Sports Stadium after nearly 20 days of competitions involving around 1,500 male and female athletes from across the police district.
The festival featured eight disciplines, including cricket, volleyball, handball, kabaddi, kho-kho, cycling and athletics. In the volleyball final, Dooru Volleyball Club defeated Seelu Volleyball Club to claim the title, while Lala XI Sopore beat Wonder Boys Panzalla in the cricket final.
The concluding ceremony was attended by students, sportspersons, civil society representatives and officials from the police and civil administration. SSP Sopore Iftikhar Talib said the festival was intended to provide youth with constructive opportunities and encourage participation in sports.
Meanwhile, in Handwara, police launched an eight-day women’s cricket tournament at the District Police Lines Ground. The T-10 knockout competition features six school teams from the area, including Monarch Secondary School Handwara, Prime Institute Secondary School Kulangam, My New School Drugmulla, Elvis Garden Public School Handwara, Hill Grange Secondary School Handwara and Government Girls Higher Secondary School Handwara.
Police said the tournament aims to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and greater participation of young women in sports. The event is being organised by Terrific Trio Trust, Sopore, and Monarch Secondary School Handwara in collaboration with Handwara Police.
In Ganderbal, Sindh Spikers Barwalla defeated Mammer Goodwill 2-0 in the final of a volleyball tournament organised by Ganderbal Police under CAP at Government Higher Secondary School, Gund.
The tournament concluded with a ceremony attended by SDPO Kangan Rajeev Raina, school officials and police officers. According to police, the event was organised to provide local youth with opportunities to showcase their talent while promoting teamwork, discipline and healthy recreational activities.
Police said the sports initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to encourage youth engagement and strengthen community outreach through sporting activities.
