Srinagar: The higher reaches of Kashmir received the first snowfall of the season on Saturday, while the plains were lashed by brief rains accompanied by hailstorms in some places, officials said.
@Kashmir_weather reported that Mahadev Peak was covered in snow.
The second spell has occurred as well, with snow over the extreme higher reaches, @kashmir_weather posted on X.
Giving details, it said, light snow was recorded over extreme higher reaches, including Zojila Pass Mountains & Gumri Mountains. Similarly, reports of light snowfall also surfaced from the mountains of Gulmarg and the nearby Pir Panjal range.
“Hailstorm, along with gusty winds, occurred in a few spots in Srinagar, along with isolated spots in other districts. The system has now cleared away from J&K parts. There are still chances of a short-duration spell in a few areas tomorrow, particularly around morning/afternoon hours. Mostly dry weather is expected to prevail till 12 September,” the post said.
It further said that snowfall today has remained confined to around 3900 metres and above, adding that when snowfall begins to occur over the extreme higher reaches, even during short spells, it can signal the onset of autumn and the withdrawal of monsoon season.
According to the MeT department, there is a possibility of brief showers on Sunday but the weather is expected to be generally dry over the next few days.
