Over 550 athletes participate in J&K UT Thang-Ta Championship

SRINAGAR: The J&K UT Thang-Ta Championship 2026 concluded on Monday at the Multipurpose Indoor Hall, Polo Ground, Srinagar, after three days of competition featuring more than 550 athletes from across Jammu and Kashmir.

Organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Thang-Ta Association and sponsored by the J&K Sports Council, the championship was held from August 22 to 24 and provided a platform for athletes to showcase their skills in the traditional martial art of Thang-Ta.

MLA Lal Chowk Ahsan Pardesi, who attended the closing ceremony as chief guest, distributed medals and prizes among the winners and congratulated participants for their performances.

In the overall Champions of Champions category, Ifra Jan of Pulwama was declared the women’s champion, while Hammad Bashir secured the men’s title.

Speaking on the occasion, Pardesi appreciated the efforts of the J&K Sports Council and the J&K Thang-Ta Association in promoting sports and providing opportunities to young athletes across the Union Territory. He encouraged participants to continue striving for excellence and bring laurels to Jammu and Kashmir.

The closing ceremony was attended by coaches, referees, officials, parents and sports enthusiasts. The organisers expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their support in the successful conduct of the championship.

The association said the event marked another step towards promoting Thang-Ta and nurturing sporting talent in Jammu and Kashmir.
