SRINAGAR/JAMMU: A 16-year-old boy drowned in the Lidder River in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, while two men are feared to have drowned in the Chenab River in Jammu division on Sunday, officials said.
In Anantnag, the deceased was identified as Barik Bilal, son of Bilal Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Laram Ganjipora.
Officials said the teenager drowned in the river at Dar Mohalla in the Chee area, prompting a search and rescue operation. Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), assisted by local residents, later recovered the body from the river after sustained efforts.
The body was handed over to police for legal formalities.
Meanwhile, in Jammu, two men are feared to have drowned while taking a bath in the Chenab River near Hamirpur.
The missing persons have been identified as Gajay Singh (30) and Rakesh Singh (35), both residents of the Khour area of Akhnoor.
Officials said police, SDRF, NDRF and local volunteers launched a joint rescue operation after the two men went missing in the river.
Their motorcycle, mobile phones and clothes were later found on the riverbank, raising fears that they had drowned. Rescue operations were continuing till the filing of this report.
