SKUAST-K, IFPRI launch advanced economic modelling programme for policy research

Srinagar: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), on Monday launched a week-long capacity-building programme on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modelling for Economic Policy Analysis at its Shalimar campus.

Organised by the Institute of Business and Policy Research (IBPR), SKUAST-K, the programme will run from June 29 to July 4 and brings together researchers, academicians, policymakers and development professionals from across the country for training in advanced economic modelling and policy analysis.

According to the organisers, the programme aims to strengthen participants’ ability to use CGE models for evidence-based research, policy simulation and informed decision-making in areas such as agriculture, trade, rural development and public policy.

The inaugural session was presided over by SKUAST-K Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir A. Ganai. Senior Research Fellow at IFPRI Prof. Anjani Kumar attended as the guest of honour, while Registrar Prof. Azmat Alam Khan and Director Extension and Dean, Faculty of Horticulture, Prof. Raihana H. Kanth, were also present.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Ganai highlighted the importance of advanced economic modelling in developing sustainable and evidence-based public policies.

Course Director Prof. Farhet A. Shaheen said the programme was designed to strengthen the analytical capacity of researchers and policy professionals through practical training in CGE modelling.

Prof. Anjani Kumar highlighted the growing role of CGE models in analysing complex economic issues and supporting policy formulation, while lead resource person Dr. Barun Deb Pal of IFPRI spoke on the application of the modelling framework in assessing policy impacts across different sectors.

Officials said the collaboration with IFPRI is expected to strengthen SKUAST-K’s research partnerships and enhance its role in economic policy research and institutional capacity building.
