The meeting was attended by the Controller of the Legal Metrology Department and other senior officials, who briefed the minister about ongoing enforcement drives, inspection mechanisms, manpower deployment and challenges in ensuring compliance across markets.

Sharma said the department plays a crucial role in protecting consumer rights and asked officials to intensify market inspections and ensure strict adherence to prescribed standards.

He said enforcement should be visible, consistent and effective in order to deter violations and strengthen public confidence.

The minister laid particular emphasis on inspections of petrol pumps and directed officials to conduct frequent and surprise checks to prevent malpractice in fuel measurement and delivery.

He said even minor discrepancies in dispensing fuel directly affect consumers and must be dealt with firmly. He instructed officials to take strict penal action against outlets found violating norms.

Sharma also directed the department to widen the scope of inspections to include shops, retail outlets and other commercial establishments.

He asked officials to ensure proper use of standardised weights and measures, regular stamping and verification of equipment and mandatory display of price lists and consumer-related information.

Calling for a more proactive approach, the minister asked the department to strengthen its field presence and adopt technology-driven monitoring systems to improve efficiency and accountability.

He also stressed the need for regular awareness campaigns to educate consumers about their rights and encourage them to report violations.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to consumer protection, Sharma said there should be zero tolerance for malpractice, fraud and exploitation.

He further reviewed the department’s future action plan and directed officials to improve coordination with district administrations and other enforcement agencies for uniform implementation of Legal Metrology laws across Jammu and Kashmir.
