Jammu: Legislators on Sunday raised a wide range of public interest issues during Zero Hour in the Assembly, seeking government intervention on matters related to governance and public service delivery across Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the major issues highlighted were regularisation of daily wagers and ad hoc employees, pending electricity dues, shortage of teachers and medical staff, delays in infrastructure projects, release of pensions and rehabilitation of affected shopkeepers and workers.
Balwant Singh Mankotia and Satish Sharma urged the government to frame a policy for regularisation of daily wagers and ad hoc employees.
Hasnain Masoodi raised concern over changes in the Political Science syllabus at University of Jammu, while Surjeet Singh Salathia sought intervention over alleged harassment of MLAs’ personal staff during security checks at the Civil Secretariat.
Several legislators, including Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, Shabir Ahmad Kullay and Qaysar Jamshaid Lone, sought relaxation and extension of amnesty schemes for consumers with pending electricity dues.
Other members highlighted shortages of teachers, doctors, engineers and LPG supplies in their constituencies, while several legislators demanded faster construction of roads, bridges, hospitals and other public infrastructure.
Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami urged the government to release pensions for elderly persons and widows before the close of the financial year, while Sajad Gani Lone sought parity in the definition of poverty under the Economically Weaker Section category.
The legislators urged the government to take immediate steps to address the issues raised and provide relief to people across different regions of Jammu and Kashmir
