Leh: A comprehensive cleanliness and urban improvement drive has been launched in Leh city on the directions of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, to transform it into a clean, organised and tourist-friendly destination.

Officials said the initiative has been taken up in mission mode, with government agencies launching large-scale operations to remove accumulated dust as well as construction and demolition waste lying along roadsides in key parts of the city.

The first phase of the drive is focused on prominent areas, including Lok Niwas, the Secretariat, Leh Main Market, Jivetsal and adjoining localities.

Alongside the sanitation measures, preparatory work for plantation is also underway, with pits being dug along these stretches to enhance green cover and improve the aesthetic appeal of the city.

The drive follows Saxena’s visit to Leh Market and Old Leh Town on March 15, during which he directed the authorities to undertake a sustained effort to address sanitation issues, infrastructure gaps and overall urban management.

Saxena, who is personally monitoring the progress of the works, appreciated the efforts of the government agencies and said such coordinated action would help create a clean, well-organised and visitor-friendly environment in Leh.

He emphasised that sustained efforts by government departments, coupled with active public participation, are essential to position Ladakh among the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world.

The UT Administration has appealed to citizens, stakeholders and visitors to extend support to the initiative and help ensure its long-term success and sustainability.
