BARAMULLA: Police in Baramulla on Friday successfully facilitated the safe movement of tourists amid heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions in the Tangmarg sub-division, ensuring smooth evacuation despite hazardous weather.

Amid continuous snowfall, a large number of tourists and visitors were stranded on either side of the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road, which had turned life-threatening due to snow accumulation and slippery stretches. In a swift and coordinated response, police facilitated the movement of around 1,600 tourists under extremely challenging conditions.

According to officials, nearly 1,000 tourists were safely escorted from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, while around 600 tourists were assisted in the opposite direction, from Gulmarg towards Tangmarg and the Srinagar side.

All police officers and personnel were deployed on the ground and coordinated the operation closely with the magistracy, Mechanical Engineering Department (MED), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and other sister security agencies. The movement was also synchronised with Budgam and Srinagar Police to ensure seamless coordination.

To manage traffic safely, a carefully regulated one-way corridor system was put in place, allowing batches of 10 to 12 vehicles to move alternately in upward and downward directions on the Gulmarg–Tangmarg (GT) road. Only 4×4 SUVs fitted with anti-skid chains were allowed to ply, ensuring better grip and stability on snow-covered and slippery stretches.

Police reiterated that only vehicles equipped with anti-skid chains and complying with safety norms are permitted on the route. With apprehensions of black ice formation and continued slippery conditions in the coming days, travellers have been advised to strictly follow official advisories.

Citizens have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during snowfall, remain cautious, and stay assured that police assistance remains available round the clock.
