Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan displayed exceptional bravery during the Kargil War in 1999, when his battalion, the 12th Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, was deployed in the Batalik Sector. On June 7, 1999, during a daring assault on the strategically important Point 5203, Khan, a key member of Alpha Company, encountered nearly 20 enemy soldiers at 0430 hours. Demonstrating outstanding courage, he eliminated three enemy combatants with his rocket launcher. Despite facing heavy retaliation and witnessing eight of his comrades fall, he refused to retreat and continued to fight valiantly until he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

In recognition of his unparalleled gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty, Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry honors.
