Srinagar: In a significant boost to postgraduate medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has added 12 postgraduate (PG) seats across various disciplines for the academic session 2026-27, taking the institute’s total PG seat strength from 242 to 254.
As per the details reported by the news agency KNO, the enhancement includes an increase in seats in four existing disciplines, besides the introduction of postgraduate training in Respiratory Medicine for the first time, marking an important development for the department.
Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo in a post on ‘X’ said that the MD Pathology seats have been increased from 18 to 23, while MD Paediatrics seats have gone up from 18 to 20.
Similarly, MD Pharmacology seats have been enhanced from 10 to 12, and MD Microbiology seats from seven to eight.
Besides this, two MD seats in Respiratory Medicine have been introduced for the first time, opening a new avenue for postgraduate medical training in the specialty at the institution.
The latest enhancement comprises 10 additional seats in the existing disciplines and two newly introduced seats in Respiratory Medicine.
Itoo said the expansion would provide greater opportunities for aspiring medical professionals and strengthen postgraduate medical education in the Union Territory.
She also stated that over the past two years, 70 MBBS seats and 56 PG seats have been added across medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir, while additional DM and MCh seats are also expected shortly.
The minister attributed the expansion of medical education facilities to the ongoing efforts “under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah” towards strengthening the healthcare and medical education infrastructure in J&K.
The addition of PG seats is expected to increase the capacity for specialist training, provide more opportunities to medical graduates seeking postgraduate education and strengthen the availability of trained specialists in different medical disciplines.
The introduction of MD Respiratory Medicine seats is particularly significant as it will enable aspiring doctors to pursue specialised training in the discipline at GMC Jammu, while contributing to the development of respiratory healthcare services in the region. (KNO)
