SRINAGAR: The Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Srinagar, has fixed a licence fee of ₹20,000 for its DesignNweave software, which combines digital design tools with Kashmir’s traditional Talim system used by carpet and shawl weavers.

Developed over more than four years in collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Srinagar, the software is intended to help designers create and modify patterns for carpets, Kani shawls and other handicraft and handloom products.

Its key feature is the generation of computerised Talim scripts, which translate designs into instructions used by artisans and weavers during production. The software also incorporates additional tools and commands and is designed to work across a range of software and hardware platforms.

The single-user licence price has been approved by the institute’s competent authority. IICT has invited artisans, manufacturers, designers and other industry stakeholders, as well as government organisations, to obtain licensed copies from the institute.

The development seeks to support the digitisation of Kashmir’s traditional craft production while retaining the established weaving system.
